Japanese traditional dolls (ningyo) are works of art in themselves! They come in many different types and styles, depending upon the age of the doll, the fashion of the day and the area in Japan where the doll was made. Usually Japanese dolls were displayed in the home for Girls' Day on March 3 every year, if the doll was a girl doll. On May 5 every year, Boys' Day is celebrated in Japan and boy dolls, samurai and their retainer and their exquisitely crafted armour and costumes, are displayed.

We also include in this category carved wooden bears from Hokkaido, the northern most island of Japan. The Ainu people of Japan live in this area and carve the local bears from local timbers with great beauty. Wooden bear carving, as a craft to raise income for the Ainu people, began in the 1940s.
