men's antique kimono & haori, new cotton yukata

Japanese men's kimono and haori (short kimono jacket) are traditionally hand made from silk, cotton or wool, with many styles, weaves and textures.  In Japan, new silk, woven cotton or wool traditional garments are very expensive. Traditionally, men wear a narrower obi (sash) than women and the colours of garments are more sombre: Blacks, dark indigo blues, browns and sometimes greys, the colour of the garment depending upon the wearer and the occasion.

The linings in men's kimono jackets (haori) are often finely woven with beautiful patterns. In Meiji times, as the merchant class was surpassing the samurai class in wealth, historical canons of status and style dictated that ornate finery be reserved for the military class. Merchants learned to hide their developing wealth in subtle ways, such as the inside of their haori.  The antique and vintage kimono and haori featured on our website are all high quality garments chosen for their fabrics, originality and condition.

We also stock new 100% Japanese cotton, made in Japan, yukata (casual unlined cotton kimono). Please see each item for a brief description and the sizes available.
